I was looking for a violin that would be conducive to playing live in a rock/metal band. Naturally, an electric made sense, it's a simple way to get the volume and power without having to fool around with microphones or attaching pick-ups. But I never imagined that I would find one so worthwhile for such an insignificant price. Now, if you're a classical violinist with a good bit of skill, this isn't for you, but then, if that's you, you'd probably never consider a cheapy like this in the first place and therefore, you aren't reading this, so I'll just ignore you.
For everyone else: This is the mack truck of the violin world. It's heavy, reliable, and it's tone is strident and powerful. It's perfect for use in rock or old-school country fiddling. And let's face it: it just looks cool as hell. If you're planning to use this in a live performance setting, I hope your bandmates aren't the jealous type. It garners quite a bit of audience attention.
All that being said, I've noticed a lot of suggestions posted by other reviewers about additional things that you need to minimalize your problems with this violin. Let me simplify, you need:
1)Some Peg Dope.
This will take care of peg slippage. You shouldn't need new pegs or fine tuners. Peg Dope works, it's inexpensive, and you can pick it up at any music store that carries violins.

2)A new bridge.
I suspect that most people who don't like this violin are using the bridge that came with it. Buy a 15 dollar Glaesel adjustable bridge (medium), and you've just created a fantastic violin for around 100 dollars.

In summation, if you are a beginner looking for a practice instrument, or someone with skill and experience looking for a violin for live performances, give in and BUY THIS VIOLIN. You'll be glad you did.
Amazing instrument!

This was a Christmas present, and my favourite one this year! I'm an amateur violinist, having taken lessons from the age of six till I was an adult and now I play on and off. It took a few minutes to set up the bridge and tune the strings, but once properly tuned they don't slip, and the bridge works fine for me. The violin is comfortable to play, doesn't bother my family and friends, and it's such fun playing around with the tone and volume - it sounds like a rock band at high volume, if you can stand it in the headphones... It even comes complete with a reasonable bow, rosin, a little cushion (that I haven't tried), headphones, a cord to connect to an amp, and a surprisingly nice carry case - think electric guitar style.

Extremely impressive and a lot of fun - I'm amazed they can do it at this price!
A violinist rates it!

Reviewer: M. Fleece,
I have been playing the violin for 18 years and I ordered this for my birthday. I love this violin! It came with a lot of extras that others don't offer, including the fine tuners! It was really easy to set up. All I had to do was make the notches in the bridge, which is easy. The strings were already put on, they just needed tightened. This is my first electric violin, and I am very happy with it so far. I have been carrying it around with me everywhere and it makes me want to practice more! It's a great violin for anybody wanting to get into playing!

I love this. Ok, this is my first Violin. And, I don't really know what I am doing. But the "e" string snapped the first day. All of the pegs slip, but I found out if you rub a bit of resin on them that helps. I love the sound, and my family loves that they can not hear me trying to play. This Violin is not for a serious player this is for learning. It is worth the price and looks very cool. I am going to replace all the pegs, and replace the "e" string and keep on learning...E-A-D-G.

I have to admit, I did not expect much based on the price but this particular violin has turned out to be one of my favorites in my collection of electric instruments. I was really surprised at the way it hold its tune and it also came with a pretty nice brazilian hardwood bow. The neck makes it a little easier to reach the higher positions but the sound really impressed me when it came time to plug into an amp. This is a fun violin. I would recommend it for anyone who loves to play violin and is looking for an electric starter to experiment with some new sounds. Can't beat the price and the sound will convince even the most diehard skeptics, like me.

They say that one of the most difficult musical instruments to play is the violin. Thus, you have an edge over the others when you know how to use it. A lot of other people want to learn how to play it in an instant. Like any other activity, it requires your passion and your skill to be able to effectively execute it. Playing the violin is an art and it is not learned overnight. The following are some commonly asked questions about this musical instrument.

Can you learn to play it within the day?

As mentioned earlier, playing the violin is a craft that you must master. There is practically no execution of any musical instrument that can be learned in a span of 24 hours. It takes more than that. Those who are experts in playing the violin have spent much of their lives establishing their knowledge on how to handle and play the violin. They have not learned even the basics overnight.

How should I learn to play the violin?

There are numerous instructional materials available in the market these days. They will show you the structure of the violin, its parts, and some important facts about what their roles are. Also, some simple major scales and songs come in handy with these materials. A more formal training can be obtained by enrolling in a violin class wherein an expert musician will guide you throughout your learning.

The instructions will of course include a brief background about the violin, its roots, and history. Then, the instructor will lead you towards understanding the parts, how to hold it properly, and eventually how to play some simple music using the scales. As you progress, you will learn to play more songs.

Things to remember during the violin class

For beginners, you need enough concentration, discipline, careful listening, and above all, patience. If you have a background of reading music, then, you should focus more on learning the correct finger position.

How often should I practice?

There is no definite calendar to follow when it comes to your practice schedule. You can do it every day, every other day, or during the weekend. It actually depends on your own availability. If you have some time to spare on a daily basis, you might as well practice with your workbook or learn online. You may also practice the same song that you have previously learned so you can quickly progress in your learning.

To have fun while practicing, you may download your favorite tunes and learn to play them. You may also practice with friends if they are available.

How do I know my progress phasing?

There are several indications of your progress. Your teacher is likely to commend your efforts and tell you of your own progress. Personally, you will feel more confident in handling the instrument and feeling the notes. You will not have much difficulty in the finger position and you will be able to play the music without focusing too much on your music notebook. You get to play the notes because you know them by heart.

Playing the violin is not only fun but very relaxing as well. You will soon be confident enough to perform in front of an audience.

As you watch musical presentations featuring violinists, you are likely to think that this musical instrument seems easy to play. But don’t be fooled, it takes time to master. It is not all about bowing the strings but there are several other factors for you to take note of. As a budding musician, you have to assess yourself for your own desire for any musical instrument.

Not everybody has the skill that is suited to execute the instrument. First of all, you need to look into your own passion. If you find yourself enticed by the violin and you feel that you have the drive to learn how to play it now is the time to get into the basics.

As a beginner, you are often overwhelmed by the difficulty and challenges that are involved in violin lessons. Don’t feel that way because you might quit too early, the classes involve various skills, tasks, and disciplines which every musician should learn and live by. Your potential will be developed to the fullest only when you become serious about playing the violin. Also despite the wide availability of classes and lessons given by expert violinists, some people still opt to teach themselves.

Learning on Your Own

One of the main reasons why some people decide to learn on their own is lack of funding to keep up with tuition fees. Another reason is lack of time in attending classes regularly. This should not be a cause of discouragement as you can buy your own workbook or learn online.

One of the basics of learning how to properly tune your instrument is one skill that you have to master. You should be able to play the correct notes. Your ears should know how to recognize the correct sounds played by the notes. You should also learn the right way to take care of your instrument. For it to function effectively and have a long life, it must be maintained and cared for.

Books on the violin include lessons on fingering, correct positions, bowing, maintenance, along with other simple musical pieces to start with. On the other hand online courses are also available. They have varied instructions on the basics of violin playing. Other instructions contain audio and video clip materials that can further enhance your learning. This is very helpful especially for the beginners.

The Downside of Learning through Books

One of the downsides of learning through the use of books is that the techniques can’t be taught effectively. There are no audio materials which can efficiently teach the proper way of sounding the instrument. The pictures can’t provide enough information especially in terms of producing the correct sound. Hence, you can’t be sure that buying the material will be worth it.

If you truly want to learn playing the violin on your own, it’s best to do it online. Using online courses will be more fun and valuable!

Product Description

This violin is ideal for the beginning musician. It features maple wood back and sides, pear wood fingerboard and four fine tuners. It also includes a genuine horse hair wood bow, rosin and a featherweight carrying case with strap and carrying handle. Accessory colors/style may vary. Here are some hints to help keep your violin in tune: 1. Although the violins come with a bridge, it is not installed. Installing a bridge should is not difficult, but if you have a problem, please email us. The bridge has to be installed for the violin to play correctly. 2. Strings do tend to slip and lose their tune on a new violin because they need to stretch. If this happens, just give it time. The strings just need time to settle in. 3. If the violin pegs keep slipping, try to push the peg in while turning it. If they still dont stay in, peg drops are available at most music stores. They are relatively inexpensive and should help the pegs stay in. 4. If a strand of hair breaks on the bow, take a pair of nail clippers and cut it from the frog (bottom of the bow) or the top of the bow. A few hairs are bound to fall out with play. Remember to rub a little rosin (included) on the bow before playing. This is a great violin to get started with. And at this price it is an unbeatable value.

The violin is a very important instrument instruments in an orchestra. It is the soprano of the string group of instruments. It originated in Europe and has since proliferated throughout the world. The violin is considered a very elegant and exquisite instrument.

The violin has several elements to its uniqueness like the neck, back and belly. These parts when coordinated and positioned well can produce a very distinct and beautiful sound. There are generally two ways to play the violin. The first way is by drawing a bow across the strings and the second way is by plucking these strings. Correct positioning of fingers and plucking or drawing the bow is necessary for an artist to obtain the correct pitch and tone that he or she wants.

There are many kinds of violin. The bass violin was the first one to be made. It was made by Andre Amati in Europe. Other types of violin are Stroh, Nail and Kit violin. The most recent violin to be invented is the electric violin.

Violins are classified under various fields. They are classified according to the era that they were produced. Different violins from different eras have their own features. Violins are also classified according to the age of the person that uses it. It is also classified either to classical or modern violin.

A violin needs extra care so that it will not be damaged. Violins need to be stored in places where there is perfect humidity and temperature. It also has to be held in certain places only. Holding the violin in different places will damage the varnish and will create cracks in the violin.

Niccolo Paganini and Alessandro Rolla are two of the greatest violinists of all time. Rolla is tagged as the teacher of Paganini and has taught him techniques that made him famous. On the other hand, Paganini strived to be the best violinist and he somewhat achieved his goal. He pushed himself and his violin to the limits and came up with different pieces that have earned him fame and respect.

There are various organizations concerning violinist and the makers of violin. One of these organizations is the Violin Society of America. The VSA is a nonprofit organization and was founded in 1973. It aims to promote the making, repairing and preserving of all stringed instruments and their bows. VSA membership is open to people who are interested in violin, viola and cello.

VSA talks about issues for violinist’s and provides information for craftsmanship, acoustics, innovation and other matters that concerns string instruments. VSA serves its members by sponsoring many competitions to honor exceptional members. There is also an annual convention with lectures, exhibits, concerts and other privileges.

Another organization is the Violin Makers Organization of Arizona International. The VMAAI is a foundation aimed to push and expand the art of violin making. It is a nonprofit and educational organization. Any individuals who are interested in the making of violins weather professional, beginner or novice are accepted into the organization.  VMAAI sponsors a yearly workshop for anybody who is interested.

The violin as an instrument has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Nonetheless, it is still struggling in terms of the support that it is getting from people all around the world. People tend to rave about rock bands rather than orchestras. Hopefully, the art of violin making and playing will gain more support and love from all walks of life.

Learning how to play the violin is not an easy undertaking. In fact, very few people engage in this activity, unlike in playing other instruments such as piano and guitar. But if you are an aspiring violinist, who really wants to learn how to play the violin no matter how hard it is, then here are some helpful tips to keep in mind.

Get a violin instructor. Although it’s hassle-free to learn playing the violin via an online tutorial, there is still no substitute to being taught violin lessons personally by an instructor. He or she will show you how to play the violin properly and will give you tips and techniques to help you improve your style.

Unlike an online tutorial, your personal instructor will show you one-on-one the correct posture, since it affects your overall performance when playing the violin, plus other things which you wouldn’t normally notice yourself. However, you must remember that when choosing a personal violin instructor, make sure that you like him or her and that he or she is easy to get along with. It’s difficult to learn how to play the violin if you don’t like the way it is being taught to you, let alone being taught by someone who you don’t get on with.

Playing the violin needs dedication, time, discipline, and patience. If you are thinking about learning how to do it overnight or without any effort, then you are in for a disappointment. To be able to play the violin well, you need time, discipline, patience, and of course dedication. The more time and effort you put into it, the better your chances of improving faster. And take note, in every endeavor, practice is always the key to improvement. So, make sure you have ample time to practice because this will help you master the finger markings in no time.

Have fun while you play, don’t get yourself tied up with bad tantrums. There’s no better way to make you play the violin better than to have fun while doing it. This is same with any instrument. If you are not enjoying what you are doing, then you’ll just dread everyday that you are playing your violin. Enjoying yourself will reflect in your playing, you’ll see.

Learn how to read the music. If you already know this, then it is not a problem to you anymore. But if not, better start doing it now. Those who have background in music, particularly those who know how to read notes, can learn how to play the violin faster than those who don’t. Besides, if you already have a previous understanding about the theory behind the music, you can more easily go to advance violin lessons. Now, you might ask how you will learn how to do this. The answer is simple. Get yourself great violin books and music sheets. Take some time reading them and you’ll see how this process can help you improve in violin playing.

Take the time to play along with somebody. If you have friends who know how to play instruments like the piano, you can ask him or her to play along with you. Just move your fingers to match the notes being played by your friends on the piano or any other instrument. This way you can hear the notes to see if they are in tune.

Product Description

“A rapturous, witty, and passionate memoir ... Violin Dreams is not only the story of a man becoming an artist, it’s a history of twentieth-century music.” — John Guare, Tony Award–winning playwright

Arnold Steinhardt, for more than forty years an international soloist and the first violinist of the Guarneri String Quartet, brings warmth, wit, and fascinating insider details to the story of his lifelong obsession with the violin, that most seductive and stunningly beautiful instrument. His story is rich with vivid scenes: the terror inflicted by his early violin teachers, the sensual pleasure involved in the pursuit of the perfect violin, the charged atmosphere of high-level competitions. Steinhardt describes Bach’s Chaconne as the holy grail for the solo violin, and he illuminates, from the perspective of an ardent owner of a great Storioni violin, the history and mysteries of the renowned Italian violinmakers.
Violin Dreams includes a remarkable CD recording of Steinhardt performing Bach’s Partita in D Minor as a young violinist forty years ago and playing the same piece especially for this book. A conversation between the author and Alan Alda on the differences between the two performances is included in the liner notes.

Are you burnt out? This might be you! and explain what you are feeling after years of playing violin. It is understandable because a lot of people experience the same thing in their daily lives, even those who are playing other instruments. Perhaps, you are starting to feel exhausted from daily practice, and you find playing it more like a chore now than something which is fun to do. Although that feeling is understandable, you can always find ways on how to regain your desire to play the violin.

First, you have to remember the very reason why you attended violin lessons. Was it because you were fascinated with how violinists play in the orchestra? Was your family inclined to music, your dad playing the guitar, your mom playing the piano, and your siblings playing other instruments as well? Or was it because the moment you first held a violin, you knew for a fact that playing it was meant for you? Whatever the reason, you must think about it again real hard because this will make you remember why you wanted it in the first place. Feel good about yourself and regain your enthusiasm to play once more.

Second, you have to go back in time and think about all those things that you have learned so far by playing the violin. Go back to your first day of attending your violin lesson and remember how you felt the first time you held the violin and the bow. Was it good? Then, think about the first note you played, then the next, and the next, until you have completed playing a whole song. Also, remember how you thought it was difficult at first and almost gave up in the middle of your lessons.

All of these memories will make you realize that you have done so much for learning how to play the violin, so now is not the time to lose that passion. You’ve invested not only your time and skills but also your effort for this. So, do you think it will make you feel any better if you put everything to waste just because you’re burned out?

Third, to really get your desire back, why not listen to the music of great violinists? Listening to the music of great masters like Paganini may bring your motivation back and once again, be inspired to be like those masters. But if you have videos of their performances, better watch them because these will have a positive effect on your thinking, encouraging you want to play that violin again.

And lastly, if all those three mentioned above do not seem to work, then what you must do now is sit back, relax, and take a break. By forcing yourself to play, even if you don’t feel like it will just make you feel worse. So perhaps, what you need is a new atmosphere, try something new even if it’s just temporary. Spend a nice vacation out of town or better yet stay home and bond with the family or your friends. Just stay away from the violin for a while, but make sure not to leave it too long. Resting for two weeks is recommended, but beyond that, it’s a no-no.

These are some of the things that you can do to regain your desire to play the violin. Remember; don’t force yourself in doing something that your mind and body doesn’t feel like doing. Divert yourself to other interests first, until you find yourself having that urge to play again.
